Sudan-Israel: towards a new turn in relations

This February 2, an Israeli plane landed in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and a “very significant change in relations between Sudan and the State of Israel” is expected to take place today, according to the Sudanese newspaper Ofek Sudan.

Sudan has previously expressed its willingness to join the Abraham Accords, but a coup that rocked the country last year delayed the process. Sudanese Prime Minister Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy recently visited Chad to make progress on the issue.

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen visited Sudan two years ago as intelligence minister.

After his meeting with Al-Burhan, he said that “the regime in Sudan is moving in a pro-Western direction, abandoning the path of those who preceded it and who supported terrorism, militias and Hamas.
